The X-Files Walkthrough & Analysis

Day 6-7 — April 7-8, 1996

Dr. Rauch’s Residence
Juneau, AK
4:30 PM
April 7, 1996

Willmore observes a man in black fatigues leaving Rauch’s house. He looks like he is in a hurry. He gets in a car and drives off. Now’s Willmore’s chance to get in Rauch’s house. Get in. Look around if necessary. Get upstairs. Willmore sees Rauch lying on the floor with some kind of black oil all over him. He’s out cold but not dead. Try waking him up. No luck! See if there’s a way to get up to the attic. There is – Willmore should be able to see a skeleton thingy hanging from the roof. Pull it. There’s the entrance to the attic. Get up. Hey it’s Mulder! He is tied up. Willmore frees him and introduces himself. Here’s how they start their conversation:

Mulder: “Jeez man, do I know you?”
Willmore: “Cable guy…you alright?”
Mulder: “No!”
Willmore: “What’s the matter?”
Mulder: “My foot’s gone to sleep.”
Willmore: “Hmmm…Agent Willmore, FBI”
Mulder: “Funny, I took you for a spook!”

Mulder is A LOT FRIENDLIER compared to Scully. Ask all questions (reserve the Frohike question until the end). Willmore tells Mulder that he’s been looking for him. Mulder tells Willmore that the search is over. Willmore tells Mulder that he’s spoken with Scully and that she’s better and out of the hospital. Mulder reminds Willmore that it’s a sanitarium. He goes on to say that – “I dropped her off there after she was shot in the warehouse. I called the Seattle office for more backup but all they sent me was more cleaners from the NSA.” Willmore asks, “Who did you speak to?” Mulder tells Willmore that he didn’t have time to ask who it was and that he didn’t want to notify anyone of Scully’s whereabouts since he wasn’t sure who he could trust (Willmore knows very well who it was the moment Mulder mentioned that he called the Seattle Office. No more doubts. It’s clear now! He just wanted to confirm).

Willmore asks Mulder how he ended up in Rauch’s house. Mulder tells him that he was kidnapped in a rail yard by Rauch. Rauch also stole his car. Mulder had gone to the rail yard to get a view of the Pacific Northwest (explained in “Missing Links Interpretation”). Willmore guesses correctly that the rail yard was Rural Route #1121. Mulder confirms. Mulder tells Willmore that it was used as a staging area. Willmore already knows that. Willmore tells Mulder that Rauch is lying on the floor downstairs, unconscious and covered in black oil. Willmore asks Mulder why Rauch kidnapped him. Mulder tells Willmore that Rauch is a navy surgeon who is involved in alien experimentation and that the alien that controlled/controls Rauch crashed into the sea two months ago.” It all makes sense for Willmore now. So, he was right – something was indeed controlling Rauch. But Willmore doesn’t understand why Mulder might say “controlled or controls.”

He wants to be clear on the entire thing. So he asks. Mulder tells Willmore that that there’s a species of alien that can use humans as hosts. He goes on to say that the parasite completely takes over the target-human, even gaining access to knowledge that the human possesses. The only way anyone can tell a difference between an alien-controlled human and others is when one sees a thin film of black oil swimming over the victim’s eyes. Mulder continues – “The crew of the Tarakan came across one of these valdeez-type aliens, who promptly nuked them. The government apprehended it and put it in one of their boxcars, but somebody screwed up and it escaped.” Willmore says, “Yeah… Rauch had that same black film on his eyes.”

Mulder tells Willmore that he’s lucky that the alien didn’t fry Willmore. Mulder is sure that the alien is trying to get back to its ship, which is why it got to Rauch’s, although he has no idea where the ship might be. Willmore tells Mulder about the man in black fatigues, who was leaving Rauch’s house. Mulder says, “Well we gotta catch up with him. He’s the new host…we gotta figure out where they’re headed.” Willmore tells Mulder about the GPS co-ordinates of the secret government facility in Juneau. Mulder is thrilled. Willmore sends Frohike’s regards to Mulder. Mulder is surprised that Willmore knows so many people – Frohike, Rauch, Scully. He asks Willmore if he knows Skinner. Willmore responds in the affirmative. Just as the two get ready to leave, they hear a door slamming. They both look out of the window in the attic.

Mulder: “Great, it looks like we have some uninvited guests.”
Willmore: “NSA?”

Mulder: “Or Jehovah’s Witnesses…I want you to keep them busy for me, long enough to meet Scully back at that facility. Then you get away and meet us there.”

Willmore’s had enough of all these aliens and UFOs (although he believes and accepts the unusual occurrences, he cannot digest it) – “Hey..hold on. I was assigned to find you and Scully. I’ve done that. I’m outta here.” Mulder reminds Willmore that the game is not over yet and that Willmore should wait around for the pay-off. Willmore feels weird about the entire thing, but agrees (reluctantly) to help Mulder. Mulder leaves.

This is a good time to go through the missing links. Click here to get an idea of the missing links.

So, why are the NSA agents here? It should be obvious, especially after reading the missing links – they’ve come to kill Willmore. How did they know that Willmore was at Rauch’s? Obvious again, especially after reading the missing links – Cook informed them. He didn’t call the Juneau office to get Willmore some backup. He called and arranged for more cleaners to be sent from the NSA.

Get down from the attic. Get down to the first floor. Get outside. Get to the NSA agents. They will inform Willmore that they are from the NSA. They’ll tell him that plutonium is responsible for the death of the Tarakan crew and the crew-cut man – Willmore knows that this is a lie. Then, they tell Willmore that his investigation is over and that they will take him to the airport so he can fly back to Seattle – Willmore knows that this is a lie as well. He knows very well why they’re there. DO NOT STEP FORWARD. So, he has two choices:

1) Make a run for it – Turn right and click on the “action-hand icon” that appears near the fence. Willmore will run. He will stop at a certain place. Turn right, step forward. He will run a little bit more and stop again. Step forward one more time. Willmore will run again and stop near a tree. Move the mouse near the logs of the tree and click when the “action-hand icon” appears. Willmore will hide under the log, wait for the NSA agents to head in another direction, get out, and leave in the NSA agents’ car. Bear in mind that it is also possible for Willmore to kill the NSA agents instead of hiding under the log.

2) Kill the NSA agents – I prefer this. After all, they are here to kill Willmore and perhaps Mulder & Scully soon enough. Willmore has every right to kill them. Remember what Willmore wrote in his journal about Shanks’ advice – “It’s either them or us.” So, no hesitation. Thinking about it realistically, it is also the safer option – this ensures that the NSA agents won’t show up later on to try and kill Willmore. So, click on the gun and shoot the two men quickly. Click on Willmore’s own rental car. Willmore will head for the secret base.

Secret Base
Juneau, AK
10:47 PM
April 7, 1996

Willmore arrives at the secret base. I believe that the time of Willmore’s arrival is an indication that Willmore waited at Rauch’s for a really long time. This was perhaps to buy Mulder enough time to get to the base. But, how did Mulder find out how to get to the base? Willmore told him. Willmore gave Mulder the GPS co-ordinates. This was most obviously not shown in the game. It’s assumed. Willmore meets Scully as soon as he enters. Lots of burned bodies there – they’ve all been fried! That thing’s in there. Scully says that Mulder has gone on ahead and that they don’t have much time – much time for what? Keep moving all the way forward and turn left. There should be two rooms in front of Willmore. One dark and another with lights on. Get inside the dark room. Go forward one more time once Willmore enters the dark room. Turn right. It’s Mulder! Mulder has some kind of a key with him. He tells Scully that he needs two of the keys to get past the blast door and into the storage chamber. He wants Scully to help him. Willmore notices a thin film of black oil swimming over Mulder’s eyes. He’s the new host! Ask Scully to run. Willmore will get away from there himself.

Click your gun and turn right quickly – there’s someone behind. Shoot him before he kills Willmore. Now, DO NOT SNOOP AROUND THAT AREA – DOING SO WILL GET WILLMORE KILLED. Just get back to the place where Mulder was – behind the door. Don’t worry – Mulder’s not there. Make sure that Willmore is always ready with his gun. Go forward all the way. Turn left. There should be a dark corridor ahead. Get in there and go forward all the way. Turn right. Some weird kind of a room should be in front of Willmore. Get inside. Turn right (twice I think). Scully should come and talk to Willmore. She’ll ask him if there’s any sign of Mulder. Willmore responds in the negative. Scully wonders if Willmore has any ideas what key Mulder is looking for. Any response is alright here. I prefer – “What do you make of the fact that the guards were burned in the exact same fashion as the crew of the Tarakan?” Scully will say that they’ve all been exposed to some kind of radiation although she has no idea what the source of the radiation is (she is perfectly aware of the source of the radiation; this is her usual scientific personality. She just doesn’t want to admit it to herself).

While she’s talking, click on the gun and be ready. Willmore is a practical man remember? He has no problems admitting that he knows what the source of the radiation is. He tells Scully he knows the source. Scully notices another guard come from behind Willmore. Shoot him before he kills Willmore. Bear in mind that Willmore has no choice here. These guards are not giving him much of a choice in the matter. He has to shoot them or they’ll shoot him. So, Willmore cannot hesitate to shoot the guards. No one except Scully there is a friendly. Not even Mulder, now that he’s being controlled by the alien. But Willmore cannot kill Mulder. If he does that, the whole purpose of his investigation is defeated.

Get out of the room and the corridor. Turn right and go all the way up front. Get outside into the area where Willmore should see a dark chamber in front of him – it’s an isolation chamber. There should be room up ahead. Get in there. Scully almost blows Willmore’s head off. She says she has no idea what’s wrong with Mulder (she knows very well what’s wrong with him. She doesn’t want to admit it to herself because of her scientific personality). She has plans. She wants them to lure Mulder into the isolation chamber. Afterwards, she will figure out how to treat him. She says that to lure him, they need the other key Mulder is looking for. There’s a security room nearby. Scully feels that something’s being protected in that room by a blast door. She says that to open the blast door, two keys are required. The two keys need to be turned simultaneously like launching a nuclear missile. Mulder already has one key. He’s looking for another. Willmore and Scully need to get that key to lure Mulder into the isolation chamber. A key guard in the room nearby has the other key. Scully tells Willmore that they need to power up the isolation chamber and get the security room opened up first. Afterwards, Scully will try to keep the guard busy so that Willmore can come and knock him down from behind. Great!

Move the mouse around near the control panel – the “eyes icon” should appear. Click! Move your mouse around until the “action-hand icon” appears and click. The isolation chamber is now powered up. Open both doors of the isolation chamber. Make sure that this is done. If both doors are not opened, Willmore will be fried by Mulder. If only door is open, Willmore will get trapped inside the chamber with Mulder. Get back into the main hall. Go all the way up front, until you have two directions to take. One to the corridor on the left, the other on the right. Take the right-hand direction, find the button there and push it. On your way out of the main hall, just as you exit, turn right/left until Willmore sees a room up ahead. Get inside. Turn right. Willmore should see a cattle-prod lying on a basin up front. Click on the cattle-prod. Willmore observes the mechanism of the current in the cattle-prod. Just as he places it back on the basin, someone comes and knocks him down from behind. He beats him up badly and brings him down to the floor. And there he is – Cook pointing his gun at Willmore’s face. He left Seattle at around the same time Willmore left to help the NSA agents kill Willmore. Cook says – “I guess you’re curious about what the hell is going on here.” Willmore already knows. He makes a crack at Cook. Cook is not impressed. Willmore gets kicked a few more times in his stomach. Cook tells him that he made up everything – Plutonium smuggling, Wong, Russians, etc. Willmore knows all this. He only doesn’t know one thing really – Why? And so he asks. Cook tells him – “Money! Lots of it! It had nothing to do with any deeply held beliefs.” As he says this, move your mouse near the cattle-prod in front of Willmore and click either right away or when Cook swirls his gun over in his hand (just for the fun of it).

DO NOT SHOOT COOK! KILLING COOK AT THAT PARTICULAR TIME WILL CAUSE WILLMORE TO DIE LATER. USE THE CATTLE-PROD ONLY ON COOK. Get out of there and get into the security room to meet Scully. She’s ready when Willmore is. She asks Willmore to pick a direction. I prefer left. But right is just as good. Turning left will cause things to happen exactly as Scully said. Willmore and Scully didn’t plan to kill the guard. They just wanted to knock him outcold. But the guard doesn’t give them much of a choice here. Willmore has to shoot him or he’ll shoot Scully. Bear in mind that the guard is not really giving them much of a choice. Without even listening to Scully and knowing that Scully is an FBI agent, he throws a death threat at Scully. So, really…not much of an option here. So, shoot! Get the key from the guard. Once Willmore gets the key, the alien-controlled Mulder will enter the area. Do all this as quickly as possible: Turn right, step forward, turn left, move your mouse over the grill door and click once the action-hand icon appears. Click (and go forward one step if applicable). Willmore will open the door and step out. Turn right, go forward, the rest should be obvious. Be sure to turn right twice once Willmore gets out of the other end of the chamber and close the door.

That’s it. Mulder falls. If any of you guys/gals have seen the “Piper Maru” episode, you should know that the alien can jump into another person by passing through the glass. And so it does… it jumps into Cook. Cook had apparently recovered and must have just been about to kill Willmore. Fortunately for Willmore, at that particular moment, the alien wants Willmore alive. The alien-controlled Cook takes Willmore back into the security area and slides the key in one of the key holes. As he does this, click on the stiletto and be ready. Scully circles around and comes to help Willmore – she’s standing behind Cook. The alien-controlled Cook points the gun at Willmore and threatens him to turn the key. Ensure that you’ve clicked on the stiletto. Move the mouse over Scully and click again. Willmore throws the stiletto over to Scully. Scully kills Cook and the alien. Job well done. The three walk out of there alive. Well…two will WALK OUT alive and one (Mulder) will be carried out alive. Sounds like Willmore will be getting a new FBI partner soon enough.

FBI Field Office
Seattle, WA
7:30 PM
April 8, 1996

Willmore is in Shanks’ office. Both are upset with everything that has happened – Cook being dirty and all. But Shanks reassures Willmore and asks him to bear in mind that they’re not at fault for what Cook did. Scully walks in and confirms that Cook, in fact, did stage the break-in. Scully and Shanks inform Willmore that everyone in the bureau are very impressed with his work in the investigation. Scully adds that Skinner has become “quite a fan” of Willmore. Scully thanks Willmore for all the help on behalf of herself and Mulder and leaves. Shanks suggests that Willmore get home and get some sleep. He wants the report on the investigation when Willmore gets to the office in the morning. Shanks tells Willmore that Detective Astadourian has some papers for Willmore to sign and that she was adamant about dropping it off in Willmore’s place, although Shanks told her that she could send it over to the Field Office. Willmore nods, smiles and leaves.

Willmore gets back to his apartment. He is stopped by Mr. X. Willmore tells Mr. X that he will go to his apartment and get him that stiletto. Mr. X responds that he is not there to get it back, but to warn Willmore that he will be needing it again… soon. Willmore is not happy, to say the least. That ends the game. The game can be saved after this, actually. But, nothing will happen after this – no major event. Places can be visited, that is all.

Additional notes:

  • Looking at Willmore’s last set of field notes, one might wonder how Willmore can express surprise and ask “What to believe? Is he (Mulder) for real?” if he has started accepting the possibility of unusual occurances. Well, you have to remember that Willmore has the least bit of interest or fascination with aliens, UFOS, and unusual occurances although he has begun to accept such possibilities. He has begun to accept such possibilities, but he is not very happy with everything that he has seen and everything that is happening. So, it’s not that he’s surprised, but just that he can’t believe everything that is happening. In other words, he finds all this to be too much to digest. After all, this is the first time he’s exposed to such things.

  • Astadourian’s insistence in regard to leaving the papers at Willmore’s apartment is another sign of the romantic development between Willmore and Astadourian. It’s a good thing that Astadourian didn’t get to Juneau. If she went there, things would have become very complicated. She knows that Willmore has the stiletto. Had the alien jumped into her, Willmore would have had problems.

  • There’s another interesting thing I found out in the game when it is played incorrectly – when Willmore shoots Cook instead of using the cattle-prod on him. Willmore will see things after shooting Cook. Willmore’s visions of letters of Barbara, Elizabeth, etc can be seen. I was able to read a few words. I think it’s a sign that he’s going to die soon. These visions will be visible only if Willmore shoots Cook, obviously. I didn’t try playing this part again because I couldn’t digest the idea of Willmore getting killed.

  • Some have complained that The X-Files Game crew made it too obvious that Cook was a crook from the very beginning of the game. That may be true. There were very obvious signals that Cook was up to something from the start of the game. However, If there had been previous episodes of this story, which showed all the friendly conversations and buddy chats between Willmore and Cook, then we probably would not have guessed that Cook was dirty at the beginning of the game. In the absence of any previous episode to this story, we should probably view Cook from Willmore’s point of view – a trusted friend and a respected agent of the FBI. That is still hard though. After all, we are mere players in the game and the signs were just too obvious.

  • DVD technology was not very popular during that time. Everything considered, the game deserves 5 stars (the highest rating). Now that DVD technology is available, may be Fox Interactive should try making a revised edition. In the revised edition, they could even try giving alternate endings – one where Cook is the crook and the other where Shanks is the crook. That would certainly make the game more interesting. But, I seriously doubt anyone is going to release a remake of this game. Even the mainstream show is done for. No, I am not among the fans who think X-Files will make a return. Also, in my opinion, the last two seasons that attempted a revival were awful. You name a new agent “Einstein?” Really?!? How can anyone take the show seriously with stunts like that? That was an Einstein move, if you know what I mean.

  • The ending was very good and introduced a kind of suspense – perhaps, all the more reason that Willmore’s crew of characters should have been brought into the mainstream X-Files. May be it’s still not too late for Chris Carter to think about the idea. But for that, he would need to start it off with a bang! – a movie perhaps, that reflects a lengthier version of the game with even more interesting things. I doubt this is ever going to happen though. It may, in fact, be too late. Let’s face the reality here – the game was released 10 years back.

Well that ends the walkthrough and analysis of X-Files Game. This is a “must-have” for anyone who likes science fiction-mystery solving games and anyone who loves X-Files.
