The X-Files Walkthrough & Analysis

Day 4 — April 5, 1996

Eavelyn Apartments
Seattle, WA

Willmore has woken up. Check Willmore’s e-mail. Everyone has replied. Shanks and Skinner urge Willmore to be careful. Amis sends a friendly message of concern with a sense of humor. Willmore would have also received a friendly message of concern from Cook (if Willmore e-mailed Cook). Now, get ready for an extremely bad day for Willmore. Head to the field office.

FBI Field Office
Seattle, WA

Get inside Willmore’s office. Sit down. Nothing to do for Willmore I guess, except wait for a call from Astadourian to visit RR #1121. Go check on Cook in his office. Hey, where is he? He’s always there. Where is he now? Look around his office – the pictures, the certificates, etc. Get out of his office. Look for Cook. There he is in the conference room. What’s he doing? He’s loading guns and is all set to go somewhere. Talk to him. He says he has good news for Willmore. Willmore wonders what’s going on. Cook says he cracked Willmore’s case for him. Willmore’s not impressed. He asks what Cook means. Cook mentions a name – “Yvgeny Smolnikoff. Known head of a ring of Georgian smugglers. And I have a witness that placed him at the docks on the day of Wong’s murder. We ordered surveillance on his little love-nest and since this morning, we’ve accumulated enough evidence to warrant a raid. We leave ASAP. The SWATS are joining us at the site. No need to thank me.”

Willmore’s obviously not at all impressed by this interference in his investigation. Cook has right only to be updated about Willmore’s investigation. That too is not a necessity. Willmore can update Shanks and end it there. Cook cannot interfere in Willmore’s investigation (unless Willmore asks for such an interference). It is after all, Willmore’s investigation. Shanks has given complete autonomy to Willmore in regard to deciding whether Cook should be involved in the investigation. So, obviously, Willmore is not happy (especially considering the fact that Cook never mentioned anything about the surveillance and every other thing earlier).

Ask all questions (just to make it interesting, ask the Astadourian question after asking all the other ones). Willmore asks why he wasn’t informed of this earlier. Cook says he was going to inform him – “I was going to tell you. But the evidence just opened up this morning and now we’re goin’ in…and besides you were pretty much out of pocket yesterday if I recall.” Willmore reminds Cook that this is Willmore’s investigation. Cook begs to differ – “Au Contraire, this is our investigation. I am just trying to catch the bad guys. You do remember that little thing we do…catching the bad guys?” Willmore says that he is not going allow Cook to conduct the raid. Cook is irritated (he is irritated?). Cook says Smonikoff is clearly involved in smuggling plutonium to the Pacific Northwest and that he is a key to the missing agents. He urges Willmore not to get proprietary in regard to his investigation. Willmore asks who the witness is. Cook asks, “What witness?” Willmore is irritated. Willmore says, “That identified Smolnikoff” in an irritated way. Cook says “Fred Kohler, 56 indigent. Was sleeping under a tuna net not 50 yards away from the murder. Heard and saw everything.” Willmore wants to question the witness. Cook says Willmore can do that after the raid. Willmore checks if Cook has a warrant. Cook smiles and says he obviously does have a warrant—a federal warrant from a federal judge. Cook tells Willmore that he had already informed Astadourian.

Important things to note here:

  • Contrary to Cook’s “Au contraire” statement, this is purely Willmore’s investigation. Cook cannot interfere in Willmore’s investigation without Willmore’s permission (in which case, it will not be called an interference).

  • Pretty much out of pocket? Willmore may have been pretty much out of pocket but it hardly takes a phone call for Cook to inform Willmore about everything that has been going on. He barged in to Willmore’s apartment complaining about not being informed about Willmore’s investigation. Willmore has no obligation to keep Cook informed. He can update Shanks and end it there. Now, Cook has been doing things that is related to Willmore’s investigation and has not been keeping Willmore informed. Here, Cook has an obligation to keep Willmore notified as this is Willmore’s investigation.

  • What witness? Bear that statement in mind for later. Try running a check on Fred Kohler in ING. No matches in any database. Doing this check doesn’t have any effect on the game though.

I feel that this part could have been made more realistic. Willmore (& the player) should have been given access to Astadourian’s number. Perhaps it could have been shown as though Willmore tried calling Astadourian in front of Cook without asking him the “Astadourian question. Perhaps Cook can be made to ask “Who are you calling?” and then tell Willmore that he had already informed Astadourian. I say this because it doesn’t make sense that Willmore doesn’t call himself. After all, he has met Astadourian. Cook hasn’t. It could have been shown as though Willmore got her answering machine just about the time Cook tells Willmore that he has already informed Astadourian. I’ll explain the significance of this raid later.

Well, e-mail updates to Shanks and Skinner. Head to Smolnikoff’s warehouse. Willmore doesn’t have a choice in the matter at that moment. He can neither let Cook go alone nor stop him at this point.

Smolnikoff’s Warehouse
Rainier Cold Storage
Seattle, WA

Willmore and Cook are ready to move into the warehouse. No SWAT. No backup. Willmore insists that they should wait for backup. Cook feels that they need to go in right way and get this thing over with. Two shots fired. Smolnikoff’s men are ready with their guns. Willmore has no choice. These men are armed. He has to fire back. Click on Willmore’s gun. Be alert. Make sure Willmore asks Cook to cover him every time Willmore prepares to fire. Turn right, shoot the three men – one at a time. After Willmore shoots the three men, turn right, left, everywhere. Where did Cook go? He’s gone. Can’t worry about him now. Stay on the same floor and look around. Zoom in on the eagle-like figure – Willmore recognizes it, it’s the same insignia found on the boxes Willmore spotted in the Tarakan. There will be a payroll log there. Go through it. It’s similar to the one found on the Tarakan. In fact, it is another copy of the same thing. Make sure Willmore is ready with his gun. Get upstairs. As soon he reaches the next upper-level, he should see kind of a fenced doorway in front of him. Turn right twice, quickly. There is another one of Smolnikoff’s men—he is armed! Shoot the guy—don’t hesitate or he’ll shoot Willmore. Remember, Willmore has no choice in this matter. These guys are armed. It’s not over yet. Turn right again, twice. Willmore should see a guy pass through the fenced doorway. Shoot that guy as well.

There is no friendly there. Everyone is armed except Smolnikoff. Get to the top floor. Keep going forward until Willmore sees some stairs. Get down. Willmore spots Smolnikoff—”Freeze, Federal agent!” Smolnikoff’s on the phone with someone speaking in Georgian/Russian. Willmore warns Smolnikoff to not move. Willmore yells out for Cook. Cook comes down. Willmore asks where he was. Cook says he was securing the first floor (Really? How come Willmore never spotted him?). Willmore’s ready to question Smolnikoff. As Willmore says in his journal, a little later, Smolnikoff is indeed a rough character. And he’s not at all happy about the raid. He expresses his displeasure right away – “Why are you here? I’ve done nothing. You have no right to come in here like this. This isn’t Russia (raises his voice).” Cook asks him to shut up. Cook asks Willmore to secure the place while he reads Smolnikoff’s rights for him. Cook says he spotted a .38 weapon downstairs – back-left corner. Wow! How convenient! If Cook spotted it, why didn’t he pick it up? This is almost as though he’s trying to make something look too obvious for Willmore. Cook wants Willmore to pick it up himself, as if like telling him “I told you Smolnikoff is involved.” But this “I told you so” statement from Cook will certainly only make Willmore more suspicious of Cook. But is this the point where Willmore can stop trusting Cook completely? Maybe! I would say the heads/tails decision continues here.

Do what Cook says. Willmore doesn’t have a choice in the matter here. Find the weapon. Take it to the FBI Crime lab.

FBI Crime Lab
King County, WA

Willmore sees a tired and sick John Amis with his head down on his desk. In the last couple of replies Amis sent to Willmore, Amis mentioned that he was not feeling well and that he was feeling pretty sick. Now, Willmore sees Amis’ sickness for himself. Willmore calls out Amis. Amis wakes up and greets Willmore. Willmore asks right away as to what’s wrong with Amis in a concerned way. Amis doesn’t know himself. Amis thinks it’s probably a flu. Click the gun. Amis is a little high in spirits after seeing the gun. He test-fires it. He confirms that the slugs that killed Wong and shot Scully came from that .38 weapon. Head back to Smolnikoff’s warehouse.

Smolnikoff’s Warehouse
Rainier Cold Storage
Seattle, WA

Ask Smolnikoff all questions (make sure the icons on the top of the screen are clicked). Willmore asks where Smolnikoff is keeping the plutonium he’s smuggling, Smolnikoff says he smuggles all sorts of things but never plutonium (he’s lying here; he does in fact smuggle plutonium and other radioactive materials). Willmore questions Smolnikoff about Mulder & Scully. Smolnikoff doesn’t understand. He asks what Willmore means. Cook tells Smolnikoff that Scully’s blood was found in his warehouse. Smolnikoff is even more confused now. He says, “What warehouse? You’re in my warehouse!” Willmore now says, “Your gun shot her, we have a forensics match.” Smolnikoff insists that he did not kill any FBI agents (he’s telling the truth here. He doesn’t even know who Mulder & Scully are). Willmore asks Smolnikoff as to why he killed Wong. Smolnikoff says he didn’t kill Wong while admitting that he knew him and that Wong worked for him (again, he’s telling the truth). Willmore asks why Smolnikoff killed the Tarakan crew. Smolnikoff is irritated. He says he did not kill the Tarakan crew, Wong, or any FBI agent and mentions that there is no reason for him to kill his own men (he’s telling truth yet again. He did not kill the Tarakan crew. He did not kill Wong. He doesn’t even know Mulder & Scully).

Willmore tells Cook that the gun is indeed .38. Smolnikoff says that it isn’t his gun. Willmore mentions that the payroll log found in Smolnikoff’s warehouse matches the payroll log found in the Tarakan and that this proves that Wong worked for Smolnikoff (this could have been left out of the game. Smolnikoff already admitted that Wong worked for him). Smolnikoff says – “So…? That proves nothing.” Willmore asks Smolnikoff what he kept in “that” warehouse. Smolnikoff is irritated – “What warehouse? You’re in my warehouse! I tell you, this is my warehouse You make no sense (raises his voice)! What do you want? Cook says that he and Willmore want the the truth from Smolnikoff.

That’s it. Cook cuffs Smolnikoff and takes him away. Asks Willmore to get the local police to secure the warehouse. Willmore’s phone rings. Get ready for an angry and upset John Amis. Amis tells Willmore that Tarakan had dangerously high levels radioactivity and that Willmore sent him into a hot area. Willmore is shocked to hear this. He was there. So was Astadourian. Nothing happened to them. How is it that only Amis was affected? Amis tells Willmore that this is why he’s been sick. He doesn’t have any ordinary flu. Amis has radiation sickness. Willmore is shocked and terribly sorry to hear this. He’s speechless and tells Amis that he doesn’t know what to say – “Oh man John! I am so sorry. I don’t know what to say…” Amis warns Willmore to be careful before he gets anyone killed. He’s furious. He slams the phone down.

It hasn’t been a great day for Willmore. First, Cook’s interference in his investigation. Now, the bad news about Amis. E-mail updates to Shanks and Skinner. Willmore can send an e-mail to John Amis here. Willmore expressed his confusion about how himself and Astadourian were not affected by radiation sickness; he wonders why Amis alone was affected. E-mailing these field notes to Amis might help cool things between Amis and Willmore. In fact, it will. Amis will reply in a calm and composed manner. Head to Willmore’s apartment and be ready for an even angrier Astadourian.

More important things to note:

  • Smolnikoff did not, in fact, kill Wong or the Tarakan crew. He knows nothing about Mulder & Scully. He does not own “Majestic Shipping,” which means that the dockside warehouse is not leased to him. He never kept anything in that warehouse. But, yes, Wong and the Tarakan crew worked for Smolnikoff, as he himself admitted. But he is lying about the plutonium smuggling. He did, in fact, smuggle plutonium. He still is smuggling it. That industrial-grade-lead container proves this. It is also very much possible that Smolnikoff killed innocent people. But none of this has anything to do with Mulder & Scully. So, essentially, Smolnikoff and his smuggling ring have nothing to do with Willmore’s investigation.

  • All through this, one might wonder why Willmore’s going along with Cook and asking the questions he asked Smolnikoff when he really doubts the involvement of smuggling. As mentioned earlier, he doesn’t have a choice. This is the only theory available to him at the moment. However suspicious Willmore is of Cook, there is a procedure to be followed. That is exactly what Willmore is doing. It is clear, however, that Willmore feels extremely uncomfortable through the whole thing. He had been feeling uncomfortable from the moment he met Cook in the morning.

  • It is strange that Amis has radiation sickness. How did he get it? Willmore and Astadourian were in the wheelhouse, in the Tarakan. Nothing happened to them. So how is it that Amis was affected. Truth is, Willmore was followed again by someone. That someone did not want anyone snooping in the Tarakan. So, as soon as Willmore and Astadourian left, they had gone in and placed something there. That something affected Amis. However, the people who followed Willmore and Astadourian, did not know that Willmore and Astadourian spotted the fingerprints. They perhaps didn’t even know that the fingerprints were there. So it remained there to be lifted by Amis. Remember Cook’s conversation with Willmore at Willmore’s apartment? Bear that in mind for later.

Willmore enters his home, tired at the end of the day. Before he even thinks about resting a little, he hears a knock on the door. It’s Astadourian. She is furious. She is angry about not being informed about the raid. The case was turned over to the task force. Several options are given here for Willmore. The most obvious one must be chosen – “Cook called you!” Astadourian tells Willmore that she did not receive any call from Cook. Willmore insists that Cook called and asked for backup although there was no backup present at the location. Phone rings. The answering machine is allowed to take the call. Astadourian is upset about the entire thing. Assuming that relations between Astadourian and Willmore have been going well, Astadourian will say – “I guess I just had you all wrong.” Phone message:

“Willmore, we must meet right away. Your actions are endangering the lives of Mulder & Scully. They are alive. But they won’t be for much longer unless you act quickly. This has nothing to do with Russian smugglers. Sandpoint Hangar Four. Dawn! Come alone or I won’t show up.” Astadourian tells Willmore that she cares less about what he does. She tells him that Smolnikoff has been released for lack of evidence, and leaves.

Try calling Cook to allow Willmore to vent out some frustrations on him. Can’t get him. So, what happened here? Did Cook inform Astadourian? Or is there just some misunderstanding here. At this point, I think Cook has given Willmore sufficient reason to no longer trust him. However, Willmore writes in his notes that he has more faith in cook than he does in Astadourian. I cannot see why except probably for the fact that Willmore has known Cook for four years. Cook has never acted like this before. Still, blatantly lying that he informed Astadourian should have been the final straw, in my opinion. Whatever you believe, one thing is certain—Cook is really making things difficult for Willmore.

DON’T E-MAIL SHANKS, COOK OR SKINNER. THIS IS A BIG DON’T. JUST DON’T. Check Willmore’s answering machine. Barbara has left a message for Willmore. The indifferent Willmore will get a polite reminder for sending checks in regard to child support payments. The kindness helps after a bad day for Willmore. Read Willmore’s journal. Let the man sleep. It has been a very bad day for him. Maybe he can sleep his frustrations out. After Willmore wakes up, head to Sandpoint Hangar Four.
