*Vice Captain Adam Gilchrist took over the captaincy for the first three matches in place of an injured Ricky Ponting in 2004-05. Ponting returned to lead the fourth match.
**Vice Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni led the second match in place of an injured Anil Kumble. Although Kumble returned as captain of the Indian team for the third match, his injury persisted, leading him to announce his retirement after the third match. That led to the beginning of “the most” successful captaincy in the Indian team’s history, and what is widely regarded by many as “one of the most” successful captaincy of “all” of cricket history, under Dhoni. Indeed, it was under Dhoni’s leadership that India won the second and fourth matches in 2008-09 ultimately leading to the 2-0 series victory.
